Work out your zakat in a minute. Enter your cash, gold, silver, shares and business stock, and the calculator applies today’s gold price to the nisab and shows the zakat you owe (2.5%). You can then pay it straight away through Elvefa’s Zakat campaign.
Calculating zakat takes four simple steps — the same ones the calculator above follows:
Example: you have $18,000 in the bank, $1,500 in shares and a $1,000 instalment due. Your net wealth is $18,500, which is above nisab, so your zakat is $18,500 × 2.5% = $462.50.
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth on which zakat becomes due. It equals:
Because the price of gold changes every day, the dollar value of the nisab changes too, so the calculator shows the current price of a gram of gold and lets you adjust it. Many people use the gold nisab; some scholars consider the silver nisab more cautious and better for the poor because it is lower, so more people pay zakat. You can choose either one. Learn more in Types of Zakat and their thresholds.
There is no zakat on things kept for personal use: the home you live in, your own car, furniture, work tools and clothing. Crops and livestock have their own rules — see Zakat on agriculture.
Zakat is due when your wealth reaches nisab and stays there for a full lunar (Hijri) year — about 354 days. Many Muslims choose Ramadan as a fixed date to calculate and pay their zakat, and the majority of scholars allow paying it early, before the year is complete, once you have reached nisab.
Elvefa Association for Relief and Development delivers your zakat to eligible recipients — displaced families, orphans and people in poverty. After calculating, tap “Pay your zakat now” to go straight to the Zakat campaign with your amount filled in; your receipt is emailed to you. Elvefa is a US-registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit (EIN 37-2183692), so donations from US taxpayers are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
Scholars differ. The majority (the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools) hold that jewellery worn for permitted adornment is exempt, while the Hanafi school holds that zakat is due on it. Gold that is saved or held as an investment is zakatable by agreement. Enter what applies to you according to the opinion you follow.
Not when you receive it. Whatever remains in your hand or account on your zakat date is added to the rest of your wealth.
Many contemporary scholarly bodies say to deduct only the instalment that is currently due, not the full outstanding balance of a long-term loan.
Both are valid. The gold nisab is higher; the silver nisab is lower, so it brings more people into paying zakat and benefits the poor more. Choose the basis you are comfortable with in the calculator.
Yes. Elvefa is registered under 501(c)(3), so your donation is tax-deductible as allowed by US law, and you receive an official receipt after every gift.
